Suggested Edible Plants for Decorating Wedding Cake

If you are baking your own wedding cake, maybe a friend is doing it or maybe you just want something different, decorating your cake with edible flowers can not only give you a special look but also can give your cake an unbelievable taste that regular frosting decorations do not have.

Here are a few edible flower ideas. You should only use these flowers if they are organically grown, are not chemically sprayed and are not picked growing from the side of the road. It is best to pick the plants the day of the wedding but if you can not, store them in the fridge on a plate with a tiny bit of water. The exception is chicory - do not store it in the fridge.

Chicory
has a spicy, bitter taste. It is a daisy like flower with very fragile pedals that grow off the stem. Pick them off the stem right before placing them on the wedding cake.

Lavender
is a perfumed taste. These blooms, even when unopened, give a pretty braid like appearance making for a wonderfully decorative edging.

Nasturtium
has a pepper taste to it. It comes in an abundance of colors but it is most commonly found in yellow and orange.

Oregano or Marjoram
both have spicy tastes. Because of the cluster of tiny pink flowers these two are great for cake top decorations. Marjoram is similar but a little less pink.

Pansy
usually has a semi sweet taste. Comes in a lot of different colors and has fragile petals. Be careful where your store them so they do not get crushed.

Rose
is mildly sweet tasting . Comes in a wide range of warm colors. Buds are used for a more traditional decoration.
