Cakes From Around the World:
Wedding Cakes and Traditions in France

France and romance have always been synonymous with each other. The French have many different but similar traditions for their weddings, as we have here in America. For instance, the bride wears an all white gown in a traditional French wedding ceremony, The dress is embellished with beads, bows, and other adornments. This symbolizes her purity, innocence, and joy.

A bridal trousseau is typically a French wedding custom. It is a bundle of goods such as jewelry, clothes, etc. that is given to the bride before her wedding. The traditional French wedding ceremony is held in a church. The church is decorated with white incense and white flowers. Wheat and rice are thrown to symbolize prosperity and fertility to the new couple.

The traditional French wedding cake is called Croquembouche. This word means to crunch in one's mouth. The cake is made of cones of cream puffs. The puffs are filled with French pastry cream, and then coated with caramelized sugar. Next, they are decorated with marzipan flowers , sugared almonds, and drizzled all over with chocolate.

The croquembouche has been used for weddings by the French nobility since the early 18th century. Each wedding guest would bring a sweet bread with them to create a tower of cream puffs. The new couple would try to kiss over the tower. This ceremony was meant to ensure a prosperous life together, which meant having many children.

Although tradition calls for the French wedding cake to be decorated with sugared almonds, there are many ways to serve it. It can be laced with spun sugar or drizzled with dark or milk chocolate over the whole pyramid of cake. The puffs can be done to complement any wedding color and theme you have.

As with traditional wedding cakes, during the cutting of the cake, most couples pose with a knife against the cake just like in America’s traditional cake cutting ceremonies. Traditionally, this cake was served by hitting it hard with a sword, and the bridesmaids caught the pieces in a tablecloth.

Of course, you can have a traditional French wedding cake for your reception, no matter where you live. So, if you are looking for something fun and unique, rather than your culture's own traditional cake, the Croquembouche might be perfect.
