Unlike modern day wedding cake offerings which very much resemble European traditional iced cakes, traditional Polish wedding cakes were not actually cakes in the sense of a fruit loaf covered with icing.
Instead the Kolacz as it was known in Poland was primarily a bread mixture which was formed into many dough's and baked to provide offerings to all the community during the ceremony. They were made by the elder women belonging to the family of the girl to be married just prior to the wedding day to ensure freshness.
There were so many baked so that everyone in the community could share in the good fortune of the couple to be married. The significance of the bread mixture was believed to ensure that the members of the community might always have food.
It was handed out to the people after the wedding ceremony as the couple and guests made their way to the party celebrations. The many Kolacz were decorated with figures of poultry and other images which were believed to bring good luck to the whole community.
As well as the dough figures two branches were made of dough and placed upright on the bread, symbols not only of the couple but also of good fertility.
