In modern day weddings a typical Ukrainian wedding will feature two cakes. A traditional European wedding cake made from an iced fruitcake and also a Korovai which is a traditional offering at a Ukrainian wedding and is considered to be one of the most sacred parts of the wedding feast .
Rather than consisting of cake mixture it is actually made from a bread mixture which is adorned with specific dough ornaments. The bread itself which represents the village community is surrounded by a wreath of periwinkle to symbolize the love and purity of the union.
The bread is also decorated with two white birds made of dough which represent the bride and groom and also many ordinary birds made from dough which represent the members of the two families. This part of the decoration is to symbolize the joining of the two families as one.
On the top of the bread in the center is a hiltse, or "tree of life," which is made from fresh foliage and is used to signifying life, fertility, and the building of a new nest.
In pre-Christian times, the bread was baked by the entire village as an expression of support for the newlyweds, but generally the bread is now made by the family of the woman to be married
